Clubhouse Vol 27

HAVE WE TURNED A CORNER?

The message from Clubhouse HQ is yes, we’ve turned a corner.

It seems like there might be – well, not a light at the end of the tunnel, but maybe a gentle diffusion of something that could be light that seems to be coming from the general direction of the end of the tunnel. Possibly.

What we can say is that we’ve definitely turned a corner. Daffodils have been spotted, as have sunglasses. One of us was seen popping to the shop without the Big Coat on. Just a light jacket. They were cold but hopeful.

So welcome to our delicate, careful optimism. In this month’s edition we have bland branding, life stories and good stress.

LIFE IS HOW YOU TELL IT
The link between your life story and your personality

Stories don’t just reflect our world: they shape it. And that’s never truer than when you’re telling the story of your own life. Psychologists believe that the kind of narrative you pick out from your past sets the course for your future.

BLANDING, CORPORATE ART AND MEDIACORE

Why do all new companies have names like Squizz, Brick and Thimblr? What are those stretchy cartoon people everywhere? Who is behind all this incessant content?

This section is your curmudgeonly guide to the the ubiquitous marketing trends of our time.

ALL SOCIAL MEDIA REALLY KNOWS ABOUT YOU IS YOUR SHOPPING
An interview with Adam Curtis

In which the Can’t Get You Out Of My Head filmmaker claims that the Cambridge Analytica scandal actually benefitted Facebook by making them seem a lot cleverer than they really are.

CAN STRESS BE GOOD FOR YOU?
The difference between good pressure and bad pressure

Astronauts lose 1% bone density every month they stay in space, because the lack of gravity means their bones have no reason to be strong. Is stress just the gravity we need to stay standing?

STOP HUSTLING, START LIVING
Do something that’s not for money

A one-minute animation about creativity, career and not needing to hustle.

AND FINALLY, FROM THE WRITING CLUB DESKS...

A JAM-PACKED PIPELINE
Works in the works

It’s been a busy start to the year here at Writing Club. We’ve been writing guidelines for fine wines, manifestoes for football clubs, TV commercials for watches, names for banks, exhibitions and chatbots – and a whole lot more.

We’ll be sharing our work on our site when it’s live!
